Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop

Press Release

The Gin Game premiered on Broadway in 1977. The play was an immediate hit, garnering four Tony Award nominations: Best Play, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director. The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop is proud to present D. L. Corburn's Pulitzer-Prize winning Tragi-Comedy The Gin Game with Sullivan County's own outstanding director, Liberty resident, Seth Kleinman. Monticello resident, Jack Leshner, is out Best Actor and Lorelei Reynolds, Liberty resident, is out Best Actress. Ken Wiley of Liberty is Stage Manager.

The Gin Game is a two-act, four-scene play about a woman in her twilight years, Fonsia Dorsey, who enters a "home for the aged" and is, for a while, saved from melancoly by the crusty charm of Weller Martin. In practically no time, Fonsia and Weller build what is essentially a marital relationship. We see the potential of a couple who certainly had some attraction to each other suddenly become aware of each other's faults, failings, fears and anxieties.

As a viewer, there are connections to one's own experiences. The Gin Game, although sad, is also inspirational. You can see how easy it is to let go of something that could be good, to let your own self-serving determination and ways of living get in the way of something good.

The Gin Game will be presented on Saturday, August 14 at 8:00 pm, Sunday, August 15 at 2:00 pm, Friday and Saturday, August 20 and 21 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, Augusst 22 at 2:00 pm at the fully air-conditioned Nartoff-Wells Auditorium of the Rivoli Theatre in South Fallsburg.

Tickets for the Gin Game are $15 adults, $12 seniors and students. For group rates or information, phone 436-6309 or 434-7232.
