SCDW's 'Rabbit Hole' to go to Statewide Competition
The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop production of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole staged at the Rivoli Theatre in July has been chosen to go on to Statewide competition at the Theatre Association of New York State (TANYS) Festival in Auburn, New York. In preparation for Festival and in order to offset the costs associated with taking the show to statewide competition, a dress rehearsal is being opened to the public for one night only – Wednesday, November 14th at the Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville. If you missed this powerful production in July, you have one more opportunity to catch it now – if you’ve seen it already, come see it again – and help the Cast and Crew on their way to Festival.
Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rabbit Hole is an intensely emotional examination of grief, laced with wit, insightfulness, compassion and searing honesty. Becca and Howie Corbett had a picture-perfect family life in the suburbs of New York until a random, tragic accident took the life of their four-year old son. Rabbit Hole delves into the complexity of a family navigating deep grief and learning what it means to try and regain a meaningful life with a re-defined sense of “normal.”
The production staged in July earned TANYS awards for Excellence in Direction (Lori Schneider), Excellence in Technical Direction (Jim Schmidt) and Excellence in Ensemble Acting to the Cast (Terri Mateer, John Neails, Taylor Lamerand, Carol Macadam, Cole Phillips). In preparation for their Festival performance, the Workshop is opening its final dress rehearsal of this award-winning production. In addition to seeing the performance, audience members will experience a taste of the Festival requirements as everyone in the cast and crew and every item (set pieces, props, costumes) have to start in a 10 x 10 square “backstage,” be set in 10 minutes, and then after the final curtain call, the set must be struck and return to the 10 x 10 square in 10 minutes. The Cast and Crew will be rehearsing this as well as the show itself in order to prepare for their Festival performance the weekend of November 16th. For a unique theatre experience and the opportunity to help defray the cost of Rabbit Hole going to the TANYS Festival, don’t miss this one night only show, Wednesday, November 14th at 7:00 pm. All tickets are $10 and will be available at the door at the Sullivan County Museum, 265 Main Street, Hurleyville. For additional information, log onto www.SCDW.net or phone (845) 436-5336.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of “Rabbit Hole”!!

Nevermore (a new musical)
Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop 2018
By William A Brenner
POE'S "NEVERMORE" IS A TERRIFYING SHOW
WITH SCARY SOUND EFFECTS, HAUNTING MUSIC
AND FRIGHTENING CREATURES - AND FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
"NEVERMORE" is a frightening show intended to scare, and keep the audience surprised and laughing. The kids loved it, pointing and screaming at the characters and the creatures, the exaggerated sound effects, haunted house music and frightening creatures who suddenly appeared onstage, above the stage, and in the aisles.
The show "NEVERMORE" was described as the imaginary life and mysterious death of the scariest of writers, Edgar Allan Poe. His famous raven was portrayed as a six-foot feathered raven wandered about the theatre quoting "NEVERMORE".
This difficult show was another ensemble success presented by the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop at its brightly lit Rivoli theatre in South Fallsburg.
Edgar Allan Poe was played by a haunted Shawn Bailey, forever lost in his bizarre thoughts, wearing a wig of black feathers. About fourteen actors kept switching roles and transforming into creatures.
The choreography by Mekayla Perneszi and the cast extended the stage into the audience.
The set crew builders, technical director, lighting and sound design, led by Jim Schmidt, particularly with its sound effects thunder and lightning kept the audience jumping. Especially chilling was the side view of a woman in a coffin box being carried off to the crypt, kicking, clawing and screaming inside the coffin.
But special acclaim in this ensemble production must go to the PIT - under Musical Director/Pianist Leon Hilfstein, Percussionist Bill Margagal, and Lee Scheumann, who banged away on the bass drums, eerie flutist Kerry Malony, and violinist Laura Baci-Clark (who played like a screechy blackboard).
Leon Hilfstein's electric keyboard effects were other worldly.
On opening night, the theatre was almost full. And almost half of the audience were children, young and old, happily waiting to get their pants scared off.
Across Sullivan County, the Forestburgh Playhouse continued its wonderful, big production musical shows. But the creative members of the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop continue to compete in a different way. Something like the Yankees and the Mets.
For example, the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop's month-long July 2018 offering was the somber production of "Rabbit Hole", showing the devastating irreconcilable effects caused by the accidental death of a four year old, and an opioid death of an older relative. July was "Bereaved Parents Month".
"NEVERMORE" offers something hilarious, scary, weird and fun for the family. Performances run through August 17th and 18th at 8PM and Sunday at 2PM (Future 2018 productions are September's "The Games A Foot", October's "Haunted Theatre Tours", and December's "1940s Radio Holiday Shows", at the Rivoli Theatre, located at 5243 Main Street, South Fallsburg, NY. For ticket information call (845) 436-5336.
This unique and wildly theatrical musical combines haunting music and poetic storytelling to chronicle the fascinating life of iconic American writer Edgar Allan Poe. A literary rock star of his day, Poe struggles with tragedy and addiction, poverty and loss, yet produces some of the world's most original, visionary and enduring literature before dying in unexplained circumstances at the age of 40. At once gorgeous and grotesque, Nevermore explores the events that shape Poe's character and career, blurring the line between fact and fiction--after all, as Poe himself writes, "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream."
